This is a great classic. Credit to Kevmcg for the first part of the video. The rest is not in English, but I hope people will enjoy it anyway. Rino Tommasi and Gianni Clerici, historical sports journalists, are commentating, so I'm sure fellow Italian tennis fans will appreciate this video as much as I always did

meh, Graf is still the greatest we will ever see lol..but classic match..Martina in her prime against a kid in Graf..when Graf hit her prime she was the GOAT by far
Martina is a great player . She was better than Steffi
Boom! Stefi did it again.
Tommasi & Clerici....ricordi...😀
This kid taking a set and forcing a second tiebreak from big Martina in 1986 was spectacular and a preview of what was to come in the following years .
The lovely Gabriela Sabatini is the player with the most wins with 11 vs the 22x Grand Slam winner 🏆 Steffi Graf. When Sabatini was inducted to the Tennis Hall of Fame, she chose Steffi to do the introduction as she stated in her acceptance speech... their matches made her better competitor.
...what a match...! i remember how close it was... if stefffi would had won, she most probably would have been an us open champion with 16. it was a kind of impressive promis of a future soon to come. i was following steffis career since i saw her age 12 (same age as me) playing in our tennis club. it was a match of the womens national german tennis league. her team mates and opponents were 18 +. and already weeks people were whispering: "das wunderkind kommt" (the wonderchild will play). and that she was: thin like a stic , a head smaller as her opponents - but a bundle of determination and explosibe energy and power, she deafeted one of the best german players in 3 sets by her unbelievable will power. and since that i also spoke about that" wunderkind" . ... a year later age 13 there was an interwiew with her in popular german sport magazine. the title: i ll become number 1 and i will dethrone martina navratilova. i thougth: very big words for a 13 years old girl. but the upcoming years showed it crysle clear:: slowly but steady and unstopable steffi was improving, became physically stronger, better and better. with the precision of a swiss watch, she climbed the wta-rankings. and she wasnt too much pushed. her father limited her tournaments - different to gabriela sabatini. different to boris becker who shot from nowhere to the top, she improved steadily and silently. international coaches from the wta-scene said: there is no one in her generation coming just close to her. when steffi became 15, martina navratilova said in an interview: if she is not stopped by injuries, steffi will be my natural successor. no question. she was not only impressed by steffis new concept of playng: dominating with an agressive baseline game. she also pointed out that graf would have the mentality of a real champion: that she would much rather loose a game as to win it by gifts of wrong line desicions. she also said: others dont wanna loose. she wants to win. tzhats the difference. ist seemed to be certain as the spring folls the winter that she will rise to the top. i m glad that i had the chance to see those both play: one eternal legend, the ruling queen who had redifined womens tennis and dominated with athleticism, aggressive serve and volley and her almos unbreakable determination..... and the upcoming young princess who dominated with agressive baseline tennis, her unbelievable foot speed and her will power. steffi emerged and improved impressively along that challenge, narrowing the gap more and more - espcially on martinas empire: the gras court in wimbledon which were much faster that time. the wimbledon final 1988 is still one of the best matches ever played.. its tennis from another universe. steffi considers it as her best performance ever. they had spectacular battles.the respected each other deep. they were real champions and they are legends. who willl be rembered ever... i reall miss them and i miss these golden times of tennis.
SEXY!! Both of them!
Those commentators are soooo annoying. Talk nonstop even though points.
The post match interview says it all. She was a wonderful competitor, but also very aware of the legends she was competing against.
MARTINA👍😊✨✨✨ 🎾😃☀️
Steffi was always a sore loser
Yes, that‘s why she is considered to be the classiest and most graceful of all the tennis greats.
Graf empezaba deslumbrar con su tennis, al siguiente ano se convirtió en numero 1
Boring and weak.
Que epoca!! Eran muy buenas la mayoria d las chicas. Habia nivel. No en 2 o1 nombre nomas
I am very irritated by the weird comments here. So many negativity, so much nonsense. It is just a match between two very talented, yet different players. Steffi wasn't playing her best that day and Martina was playing smart and consistent. It is just that, people. ;)
It's really sad isn't it. There are so many weirdos out there who massively over identify with their favourite player. Except it seems to be the image they have in their head of the player, and not what they were like in reality.
Hermoso partido ❤❤❤
Martina forever in our hearts 🎾 ❤🔥❤🔥
The spring of 1988 had some ups and downs for Steffi Graf. Perhaps dealing with the pressure of becoming #1, perhaps playing a bit too much, she had her first loss to Gabi at Boca Raton and then her second one in a row here. She had also been match point down to Pam Shriver at Boca Raton. During the Lipton tournament, she was actually at risk of losing her #1 status. Martina Navratilova had been on a great winning streak after the Australian Open and she won 5 tournaments in a row (including beating Gabi in the final here), closing the gap with Steffi. After this, Steffi pulled away. She only had one more defeat all year (To Shriver in November) whereas Martina Navratilova's form fizzled out over the summer. Gabi's wins over Steffi in Florida became something of a regular occurrence.
Sabatini beat Steffi 8 times in a row in Florida from 1988 to 1992.
I loved Graf in early ages when she was breaking through. Forhand was something it looks it can only get bigger and better. But her backhand returns that she played sometimes like volleys from base lines were so brave and learned to perfection already....the way she used Martina's power and the pace of her serve against her.
2nd year in a row Graf gave MN a poor handshake.
One of the best matches at the US Open in the 80s. It's interesting that in the two Slams Steffi played in '86 (the other being the French), she held match points but lost the matches.
What a cold person that Graf was at the net. I never liked her.
Steffi was the better player.
Steffi was ungraceful in defeat.but she was young
Peak 88/89 Steffi was 158-5 win/loss. One loss each against ASV and Shriver when Steffi was ill in both cases. And 3 losses against Sabatini.
"When Steffi was ill in both cases"... well she was physically fine enough to step on court!
@@keithjacobson1640 But nothing more.
Genius point from Clijsters! It reflects many years of hardships and experience. Her final smile is like she is finally realizing how easy it is, when its meant to be 🥰
Steffi very lucky to be in the final. Pam shriver had held a match point against her in the semi finals.
No matter what you say, for a 15 yr old to beat Graf, with all the experience she had, was a huge thing, there`s no excuse for Stefi. No wonder Hingis became no1 later on. If she did drugs was her own problem, you cant bring her down with that, such a low move of you.
The great two LEGENDS👋
Cuantos lindos recuerdos de esas épocas maravillosas!
👏👏👏❤️❤️
To Elma R: I am only a few years older than both of them. That's what I meant.
If Steffi Graf played tennis so well, no one can win.
Mc Enroe is the reason why I began tennis in 1978 Love from 🇨🇵
Steffi comes from city 10 KM besides my village and when she became famous in 1985 it must have been a friend and me went with our bikes to her city. In that times Stars used to give signed cards and posters to their Fans and when we arrived we found a lot of kids already their but Steffi was very respectful to all these kids and very friendly as well. We went home with our bikes and i remember that Steffis signed Poster hang over my bed for years. I am still impressed from these trip we did with our bike and how natural here behaviour was.
There are indeed millions of stories how respectful and friendly she was towards fans or the lower echelons of tournament staffs. Then again WTA suits and certain media people had sometimes problems with her. Not the little guys and gals.
But she was not always nice to other players when she lost. I admire Steffi but the truth is the truth.@@carrerau7138
Martina has such a beautiful service motion. That lefty serve sliding into the box must have been difficult to handle.
Thank you for sharing!! I was one of the ball boys in this video!
Conchita always too passive against Monica. Standing too far back and allowing Monica to control the rallies.
Martina was more animated in this match than during her entire career against Evert,it seemed! Used all her guiles and skill to thwart an upcoming Graf.As the years wore on,both Monica and Graf used to play passing shots frequently against a net charging Martina .
1:30:15 backand graf. amazing how he never used this shot anymore ps Tommasi Clerici the comment
a veteran move, vs a teenager, atleast steffi learned her lessons here, and just became a better player with this loss.
But a few months later, in Wimbledon. Graf used straight sets and defeated Hingis very easily.
Martina was a very sore childish loser.
I'm here for the handshake!! one of my favorites LOL!!!!
What was so special about the handshake?
@@carrerau7138 lol watch it .lol
@@nickhorgan4349 Short and professional. Like they do it in football.

Graf is not the GOAT. In fact, it’s shocking how few records in the WTA world record book that she actually holds. Graf has the golden grand slam and most weeks at number one, but that’s about it. She has a shocking amount of losing head-to-head records at 9. She has a winning record against 3 of the all-time top 10 players. Evert holds the record with winning H2Hs against 4 of the all-time top ten. Graf does not have the most titles at the Austrian, French, Wimbledon, or the US Open. Those records belong to Williams, Evert, and Navratilova. She does not have the most GS titles on the various surfaces.. hardcourts, clay, or grass. Those records again belong to Williams, Evert, and Navratilova. She’s not the best at any grand slam or on any surface. She doesn’t have the highest winning percentage all time or at the grand slams. Those records belong to Court. So how again is she the GOAT? She isn’t. at 47:00, Evert said she'd still put her money on Navratilova over Seles at Wimbledon. Well we all know now that Monica and Martina did meet at Wimbledon that year, which Monica won. I wonder if Chris remembered this public statement after Seles defeated Navratilova at Wimbledon just 4 months later.
Apart from the controversy over the grunting and Martina's complaint, I think that Wimbledon semi final took a lot out of Monica emotionally. I think deep down she didn't really think she was going to win that match against the queen of grass - her look of relief and almost shock when she won said a lot. I think in many ways it left her very emotionally flat for the final.
